When you are reading or watching a review and the reviewer spouts total BS as fact...AND THEN says something like “There is no arguing that fact...unless of course you don’t know what you’re talking about”

GUHHHH!! I get that you can’t be an expert on every vehicle you review but when you don’t have a clue...please don’t challenge people who do to correct you.

What was the bs fact?

Softer suspension is better off road. fact.

I mean, that was sort of the driving mentality behind the original Range Rover’s setup; softer springs meant that when the spring was extended past equilibrium, there was less force pulling back up on the wheel, which would have reduced traction. Of course, at the time it was also heretical for using coil springs instead of leaves. The balance may be different in more modern vehicles.

Also depends heavily what sort of off-road you’re talking about. Desert racers have way different suspension needs than rock crawlers, who have different needs from people just doing mild trails.

But, in general I agree. The sort of “non-car” reviewers like KBB, Consumer Reports, Tech blogs, etc... Seem to be the worst about it. That and having a “review” that consists of reading off the car’s press release.

Now I’m a complete noob when it comes to off reading but would long travel suspension be an example of soft suspension? Doesn’t it soak up the bumps and ruts better?

Agree to all, and I agree that there are some situations that demand a soft suspension but this generalization (especially when they espouse the Raptor as the better choice) grinds my gears. As for the rangie, it wasn’t so much spring rate as much as down travel, the range rover had so much down travel that its wheels could droop further into a hole than the uptravel could resist on the opposite side of the lever arm.

Travel =/= rate. There are many factors that go into a suspension system

Up travel

Down travel

spring rate

Rate curve

bound

rebound

as well as other things like bypass (which changes the damping) and progressive bump stops. All things being equal putting softer suspension on an offroad truck will result in a less capable, less tolerable off road truck than a firmer one.

It depends how they’re setup. The main advantage is they have a longer travel distance to dissipate the energy of an impact, which makes them absolutely essential if you’re going to be doing any jumping. A standard suspension tends to bottom out on large bumps, which is why you get the very abrupt impact.

I want a Tacoma so bad. I miss mine so much.

Someday I will have money and buy a new Quadcab TRD off road with the 6 cylinder and 6 speed in desert tan.

“There is no arguing that fact...unless of course you don’t know what you’re talking about”

this is basically 90% of the comments on Jalopnik.

Side note: if they airbags deployed in your car during light off roading would you be responsible for that bill? Fuck that. Same with that Camaro case.
